Parent Governor Elections

09 Dec 2013

Voting has now closed

My son, Conor, is in 4EL at Handsworth. Having been a primary school teacher for the past eight years, I come with a wealth of knowledge and experience in education and a passion for ensuring learning in schools is fresh and engaging.  A good parent governor supports a school without ignoring its faults.  I will happily question and monitor how the school is run, help to maintain high standards and be there to represent your views on decisions made. Ultimately, I want my son and the community’s children to remember Handsworth as a safe, nurturing and enjoyable place to learn.

Daughter in reception. Growing up in a single parent family in a council estate, it was in education that I found opportunities to improve my situation. I am therefore passionate about improving standards of education and widening opportunities for children to thrive within a safe and supportive environment. I have a law degree and ten years’ experience working with children in various roles including; teaching, mentoring and volunteering with Youth Offending Teams. I have knowledge of policies and legislation relating to children and am actively involved in several local community groups.  I currently manage projects for a homeless charity in Waltham Forest.

I have 4 children attending Handsworth; George in nursery, Henry year 1, Alice year 3, Lily year 6. From Lily starting nursery to George leaving year 6 will span 15 years. My children have benefited/will benefit immensely from Handsworth’s education, discipline and extracurricular activities and I’d like to give something back. My expertise is in marketing communications so I would like to contribute as parent governor by improving the communication between school, pupils and parents. We all feel it’s vital that important information is communicated clearly. Today’s technology, along with some good planning, means we have every tool at our disposal to get this right.

My name is Rebecca Lewis and I currently have three children attending Handsworth (Noah -2CD, Amelie-1DL, Gabriel- RW) with the 4th due to begin the Nursery in September. I am a Class Rep in Year 2 and I  have been heavily involved in implementing the Reading Mentoring scheme with Miss Walter this last year. As a primary teacher myself, I realise the importance of a strong governing body and I would relish being part of that. As your representative I would ask the questions that need to be raised and represent the views of the parents.

NIALL TAYLOR My daughter, Amelie, started in Reception in September. Her sister will hopefully be joining Handsworth next year. So I’m committed to working hard to ensure Handsworth continues to provide the best environment for all our children to achieve their full potential. To me, that means having a challenging curriculum, maintaining a strong set of values, and keeping parents informed and involved. Both my parents were teachers and I’m aware it’s really important staff and parents work together to raise standards. And as an ombudsman, I’m fair-minded and used to dealing with conflicting views, yet unafraid of making difficult decisions.

I want to actively support Handsworth to give children an excellent foundation in life. I would seek to learn and understand what it takes to be a good governor, ask questions and support the Chair and staff to excel. I am a mother of 2 with Edward in year 1 and Hannah, age 2. I am also a Chartered Accountant, working part time for Macmillan Cancer Support as a Finance Project Manager, implementing system improvement projects, and also acting as a Trustee for their Pension scheme. I'd relish the opportunity to use my skills to help the school thrive.
