Newsletter Summer Term July 2012

10 Jul 2012

We are on our ten day countdown and it’s hard to believe just how quickly this year has gone.  The children have worked incredibly hard and hopefully have had an amazing year.
Rain didn’t stop play at our Summer Fete, which included our own ‘mini Olympics’.  A special thank you to Friends of Handsworth organisers and to all the parents, grandparents and children, who helped make the day such a success.  It’s special days like this that the children will remember.  Funds raised this year will contribute towards much needed new playground equipment for the Key Stage 2 playgrounds.  FOH have also kindly funded the Year 6 leaver’s books.

Sports Day was fantastic.  The sun was shining, the children and parents were great, as well as our Year 10 helpers who were incredibly good sports.  Do get in training for next year. I’m pleased to announce that no blue tack was found after an inquiry into the KS1 parents and teachers egg and spoon race. (I’m not convinced as those eggs were incredibly steady!). Fantastic sportsmanship was shown by all.  Thanks also go to Micheala, one of our sports coaches, who lead the KS2 warm up and to all the organisers.
A separate newsletter will be posted on the school’s website this week, detailing a round-up of sports achievements this term.  As well as the many sports activities,  Ms Marie Crombie, led a special assembly for Key Stage 2, sharing her experience at the Athens Olympic Games.  Ms Sharon Miguel also described what her role will be in chaperoning athletes and ambassadors from the Philippines during the 2012 Olympics.

Our last Art exhibition takes place after school at 3.45pm on Wednesday 11th July, in Mrs Leftwich’s class to celebrate the afterschool art club children’s work.
Congratulations to Miss Bossman and Miss Walby who have graduated through the Graduate Teachers Programme with flying colours.   This term we say goodbye to a number of very valued staff.  These include Mrs Jane Aksut; Mr Ian Kilpatrick; Ms Kirsten Walby; and Mr Justin Walesby.  We wish them every success for the future.  Miss Lorraine Bossman and Mrs Isabella Lucas will be officially joining the teaching team in September and Mrs Caroline Murray will return from maternity leave.  We will also welcome two GTP students Miss Rachael Edwards and Mr Robert Tromans.
We have started the transition visits for the new Reception classes.  It seems such a short time ago that our current Reception children joined us.  I’m sure our new joiners will be as wonderful as our current cohort.  For the children in our Handsworth Nursery that are moving on to different schools, we wish you every success.  Those schools are very lucky!
Governing Body Update We are delighted Ms Nadina Bailey will be joining us as Local Authority Governor. Ms Bailey is a journalist and TV presenter and will further strengthen the Governing Body team.

Still to come in our count down to the end of term:-
Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th - New Reception children visits

Tuesday 10th July - One Drum workshops
Thursday 12th July - Year 6 Graduation 6-8.00pm

Wednesday 18th July – class changeover afternoon – meet your teacher

Your fundraising this year has enabled the FOH to donate a special leaver’s book and gift for each child in Year 6.  You have also helped contribute to the redesigning of the Key Stage 2 playground (Watch this space…).
We are delighted with the response for our Summer School which takes place during the first week of the holidays.  We are sure the children will have an amazing time.

Do remember that school finishes at 2.30pm on Friday 20th July.  The Friends of Handsworth have kindly organised afternoon Tea and Cakes from 2.00pm.  Please do donate a cake and join us if you can.  Weather permitting we’ll also give Year 6’s a fabulous send off in the Key Stage 2 playground from 2.10pm on that day.  You are welcome to join us to wish them the very best of luck as they embark upon their next exciting journey. (All children will return to their classrooms to be collected at 2.30pm)

A very big thank you to all of the organisations, professional coaches, YMCA, parent helpers, fruit scheme, uniform shop and parent/grandparent volunteers who have done a great job this year.  Last but not least, an enormous thank you to the dedicated team of Handsworth staff.  Thank you all for your hard work!

School re-opens to pupils from Years 1 to 6 at 8.50am on Thursday 6th September..

From all of the staff at Handsworth Primary School, we wish you all have a wonderful Summer Break.  Happy holidays!
