Spring Term 2012 2nd Half

Dear parents and carers,

We hope that you have had a really restful weeks break and that we can now look forward to a warmer Spring with no more snow.

On the last day of term, the children finished with a day of high energy exercise. An ex -national skipper joined us to teach the children in Key Stage 2 lots of skipping techniques, skills and tricks.  Watch this space Key Stage 1 as your skipping day will take place this term (date to be confirmed).

We will continue to ‘get fit for the Olympics’ by participating in Sports Relief 2012 on Friday 23rd March.  This will be a sports themed non uniform day – full details to follow.

We are delighted to be holding a Roald Dahl Day on Saturday 25th February.  This is a first for Handsworth, with Storytelling sessions by the Roald Dahl Story Centre and Creative Writing Workshops.  Refreshments will be available in the servery.  Some places are still available, so do contact Victoria on 07775 562605 for further details, or to book a place.

I hope that you are accessing the school website to gain information.  The class newsletters for this half term will be available via the website, on your child’s class page next week.  You can now also see who has been awarded ‘Star of the Week’, again via the class pages.  Watch this space as Blogging is coming soon!

A huge thank you to Ms Jennie Stallwood for her fabulous artist interpretation of the school logo.  Please do have a look at her artwork, which takes pride of place in our main corridor.

Last term a number of children from Handsworth worked collaboratively with children from Joseph Clarke School to undertake a series of projects.  Their achievements were celebrated at both schools in special assemblies.  The childrens art work will be displayed at both schools.  Children from Joseph Clarke have also joined our children for playtimes last term and our pupils have been commended for making our visitors so welcome and safe.

School Meals money for the half term is £60.00 and is now due.  Meals should always be paid in advance.  We have doubled the number of school meals to 200 pupils, which is fantastic.  However, we are now at maximum numbers, so if your child would like school meals, please request that they go onto our waiting list and the office will notify you as soon as a place becomes available.  Please also contact the office if you feel your child may be eligible for Free School Meals, so that we may advise.
To celebrate World Maths Day, all pupils will be coming home with their own special id cards to log in to practice their maths.  Please encourage your child to participate in the on-line activities at home.
Premises update During the half term we have had the main corridor windows refitted to provide better security and help our carbon footprint. During the Easter break the main hall will be revamped and a number of classrooms redecorated to help further improve the learning environment for our children and school community.

Please could you check at home for any School sports kits and return them, washed , to the school.  Thank you

School Security A polite reminder that adults should not be accessing the school via classrooms or corridors at the start or end of the day.  As part of our Safeguarding policy, we need to account for every adult on site. All of our volunteers (including parent/grandparent helpers) are police/ CRB checked.  If your child is late or if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to come into the office via the main door.

Over the next few days, we will be sending out a School Travel questionnaire to gather the views of parents.  I would urge you to complete this questionnaire.  Mary Wilson, Chair of Governors and myself have had a meeting with the Local Authority to discuss our concerns regarding the congestion of traffic and safe crossing of the road on Handsworth Avenue.  One solution would be to introduce a pedestrian crossing outside of the school, so that parents/children do not have to cross in between parked cars.  The cost of this is in the region of £20k and we are building a case for the Local Authority to approve based around our concerns for pupil safety.  Please ensure that if you do drive to school, you park on allocated markings and not on the school zig-zags, as this further exacerbates traffic problems.  We will keep you informed on any progress.

As always, do please feel welcome to come and see me if you have any queries or concerns.  I am around at the beginning and end of most days.  You are also most welcome to share any good ideas for school improvement via our website.

Here’s to a lovely half term.
