Spring Term First half 2012
Dear Parents and carers,

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all.

2012 is set to be an exciting year with both the Olympics and The Queens Diamond Jubilee.  We look forward to celebrating both with you at Handsworth and will update you of our initiatives in the coming weeks and months.

The children will enjoy The Snow Queen Pantomime in school on Friday morning, led by a professional theatre company.

School Uniform with the new school logo is now available to buy at the school uniform shop from this week.  This includes the jumpers for children in Nursery.

The cost of school meals for this half term is £56.00.

The cost of this terms music tuition is £50.00.  In Key Stage 2, there are some places for clarinet and flute tuition.  Please speak to the office if your child would like to play the clarinet or flute, or if you would like more information.

Design & Technology exhibition will take place after school in the classrooms on Thursday 19th January.  Please come along and see your child’s work.

School Parking  Handsworth Avenue is a particularly busy road, with Nursery, Primary and Secondary pupils crossing the road to access both schools.  Please ensure that you do not park on the school zig-zags for picking up or dropping off pupils as this further exacerbates the problem and is illegal.  Access to the school must be clear at all times for health and safety reasons.  Thank you also for not using the car park as a walk through.  Please note that the car park is for staff use only.

School Clubs Our clubs are starting within the next two weeks.  Do encourage your child to participate in one of these extra -curricular activities if they can.  We are delighted to be starting a Key Stage 2 Handsworth Choir, led by Ms Walters.  If any parent or grandparent would be interested in helping organise a Chess club either at lunchtime or after school, please do come and see me as we need a volunteer- we have a group of children keen to participate!

This term our national fundraising will be via participating in Sports Relief on Friday 23rd March – more details to follow.

Thank you as we raised £85.00 through our decorating of stars on the Christmas tree for Oxfam.
Through your active fundraising this year with Friends of Handsworth, we are delighted to be able to invest £6000 of your fundraising to improve the school for our children.  We are compiling a ‘wish list’ of improvements that you feel the children would benefit from.  So that we can gather your views, (and get some imaginative ideas), I would be grateful if you could send in your ideas via the school website.  We will then collate your responses and see what is possible.

We are excited that FOH have organised a Roald Dahl Day on Saturday 25th February, with storytelling sessions and activities (more information to follow).

New Joiners I’d like to welcome Mrs Sheeley, who has joined us this year to work with the team in the office.  Mr Justin Walesby has also joined Handsworth, as a student social worker.  (These pastoral placements are now common within schools).  Justin will be working with children running nurture, pastoral and social skills groups, as well as mentoring students. He will provide a welcome addition to the school team.

Kindest Regards
