Maths in the EYFS

14 Nov 2020

Maths in the EYFS

In EYFS, children learn maths through a 'hands-on approach' which is based on play and their daily experiences. At Handsworth, our EYFS environment both indoors and outdoors provides mathematical opportunities for the children to explore, sort, compare, count, calculate and describe, which allows them to develop into creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers from an early age.

Maths in the Early Years Foundation Stage is divided into 3 areas:

Numbers

Developing a strong grounding in number is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically. See link below for more information and suggested activities.

Patterns and connections

It is important that children develop positive attitudes and interests in mathematics, look for patterns and relationships, spot connections, ‘have a go’, talk to adults and peers about what they notice and not be afraid to make mistakes.
See link below for more information and suggested activities.

Spatial reasoning

Understanding spatial relationships allows children to move and navigate in their physical world around them. Activities like climbing and squeezing themselves into different types of space develops this further.
See link below for more information and suggested activities.
